A Coordinated, Intelligence-Driven Strike

Governor Ododo revealed the details in Lokoja, explaining that the raid was the culmination of over a week of sustained, intelligence-driven surveillance. The operation was executed by a joint task force comprising various national security agencies working in tight coordination with the state government.

The Presidential Charge That Galvanized Action

Ododo attributed the renewed vigor behind the crackdown to a recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Rather than receiving praise, the Governor was challenged to intensify his efforts. “When I met Mr. President, I expected commendation, but he told me to go back and do more for my people. That statement re-energised me,” Ododo stated. This directive led to an immediate strategic re-alignment with security chiefs and the decisive action that followed.

The overnight operation targeted a major criminal enclave, resulting in the strategic recovery of a significant weapons stockpile. While no arrests were made during the raid—suggesting the criminals were forewarned or absent—the seizure itself deals a severe blow to the logistical capabilities of criminal networks operating in the region.

Why Kogi is a Critical Flashpoint

Governor Ododo provided crucial context for the security challenges, highlighting Kogi State’s unique and strategic geography. As the literal confluence of Nigeria, Kogi shares boundaries with ten other states and serves as a major transit corridor between the North and the South. This creates multiple, often difficult-to-police entry and exit routes, making the state a natural hub and haven for criminal elements and insurgents moving weapons and personnel.

“Kogi State is fully alert. The DSS, the police, the military, the navy, and all other security agencies are working relentlessly, day and night,” he declared. “We’ll never bow to criminals, and we’ll never negotiate with them.”

The Arsenal Recovered: A Breakdown of the Threat

The scale of the recovered arsenal underscores the severity of the threat. The items listed by the Governor include:

  • High-Powered Rifles: 24 AK-47 rifles, 23 pump-action rifles, 1 Tavor rifle (a modern Israeli assault weapon), and 1 FN rifle.
  • Pistols and Specialized Weapons: 4 Barrett pistols, 4 Browning rifles.
  • Ammunition: 520 rounds of General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) 7.62mm ammunition, plus large quantities of AK-47 ammo and cartridges for pump-actions and Barrett pistols.
  • Accessories & Components: 42 magazines, handcuffs, 13 holsters, tear gas cartridges, and submachine gun (SMG) components.

This inventory is not typical of small-time crime; it points to a well-equipped, organized group capable of sustained armed violence, possibly linked to terrorism, large-scale kidnapping, or organized militia activity.

The Path Forward: Collaboration and Public Vigilance

Governor Ododo emphasized that this success was a direct result of inter-agency cooperation and actionable intelligence. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the heads of the DSS, military branches, police, and NSCDC for their support.

Moving forward, the strategy hinges on a two-pronged approach: sustained top-level coordination and active community involvement. The governor made a direct appeal to residents, urging them to become active participants in security by providing timely and credible information to the agencies.

While assuring citizens that the situation is under control and encouraging them to pursue their lawful activities without fear, Governor Ododo’s message was clear: the recovery of this arms cache is not the end, but the beginning of a declared total war on criminals in Kogi State. The state’s geographic importance makes this fight critical not just for local safety, but for the security stability of a large swath of Nigeria.
