A New Era for Nigerian Geosciences: Inside the UNILAG Centre of Excellence

In a landmark collaboration for Nigeria’s energy sector and academic development, a world-class Geosciences Centre of Excellence has been inaugurated at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The project, delivered by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), represents a strategic, long-term investment in building indigenous technical capacity.

More Than a Building: A Hub for Cutting-Edge Research and Training

The centre is an impressive five-level structure, but its true value lies in its state-of-the-art facilities designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It is equipped to support advanced undergraduate and postgraduate studies while directly addressing critical industry needs.

Key Facilities and Their Strategic Importance

The centre houses specialized laboratories that move learning beyond textbooks:

Seismic Laboratory and Interpretation Room: This is crucial for training the next generation of geophysicists. Seismic data interpretation is the cornerstone of modern hydrocarbon exploration, and having this facility locally reduces reliance on international training and software testing, keeping talent and expertise within Nigeria.

Hydrogeology, Mineralogy, and Environmental Geology Labs: These facilities expand the centre’s mandate beyond oil and gas. They enable critical research into water resource management, mineral exploration, and environmental impact assessment—essential for sustainable resource development and environmental stewardship.

The centre also features a comprehensive library and a digital museum, creating a holistic knowledge repository.

A Shared Vision for National Development

Leaders from all partnering institutions underscored the transformative potential of the centre during the commissioning ceremony.

Ronald Adams, SNEPCo Managing Director, framed it as “a long-term investment in Nigeria’s greatest asset — its people.” This sentiment highlights a shift from pure resource extraction to human capital development as the foundation for a sustainable energy future.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner Tola Sule, emphasized the pedagogical shift: “the building will create an environment where students don’t just learn by textbooks but by doing.” This hands-on, experiential learning model is vital for producing industry-ready graduates.

Olanrewaju Igandan of NNPC called it “a testament to what can be achieved when industry, regulators, and academia work together.” This tripartite model—industry funding, regulatory guidance (NCDMB), and academic execution—is a blueprint for successful national projects.

Measuring Success: Impact Over Infrastructure

Felix Ogbe, Executive Secretary of NCDMB, delivered a powerful metric for the centre’s future: “The success of this centre will not be measured by its structure, but by its impact. The number of skilled graduates produced. The quality of research it generates. The solutions it provides to industry challenges.” This sets a clear, outcome-driven benchmark focusing on talent pipeline, innovation, and practical problem-solving.

Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, outlined the operational vision. The centre will offer advanced analytical services, degree programs, and crucially, customized short courses and executive training tailored for industry professionals. This ensures it serves as a continuous learning hub for both new students and existing workforce upskilling.

Building Capacity at Every Stage

The project’s execution itself embodied its capacity-building mission. Originally conceived in 2010, it was built by the indigenous firm 225MM Construct Limited. Furthermore, students from UNILAG, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ilorin, and Yaba College of Technology gained invaluable hands-on experience through internships during construction, embedding project management and technical skills early in their careers.

Part of a Broader Educational Ecosystem

The Geosciences Centre of Excellence is not an isolated effort. It is the latest milestone in a wide-ranging educational support program by SNEPCo and its partners. This ecosystem includes university scholarships, donations of science laboratories to secondary schools, and the construction of e-learning centres at other Nigerian universities. This multi-tiered approach strengthens the entire educational pipeline, from secondary school to advanced research, ensuring a steady flow of talent into sectors critical to the national economy.

By fostering indigenous expertise, reducing dependency on foreign training, and creating a nexus for industry-academia collaboration, the UNILAG Geosciences Centre of Excellence stands as a pivotal institution for the future of Nigeria’s energy sector and geosciences advancement.
