Algeria’s Industrial Ambition Takes Shape as Oran Governor Inspects Fiat and Tosyali Expansion Projects

ORAN, Algeria – In a significant demonstration of Algeria’s industrial development strategy, Oran’s Governor Ibrahim Ouchen conducted high-profile visits to two major industrial facilities on Tuesday, highlighting the country’s push toward greater manufacturing self-sufficiency and export capacity.

Fiat Algérie’s Production Expansion

During his visit to the Fiat Algérie automobile plant in Tafraoui, the governor inspected critical expansion phases including welding and painting units that are expected to significantly boost production capacity. The timing of this inspection underscores the government’s focus on industrial growth as a key economic driver.

The plant’s transition to producing the new “Grande Panda” model using the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) system represents a strategic shift in Algeria’s automotive manufacturing approach. With local integration rates projected to reach 20% at launch and exceed 30% by 2026, this initiative aligns with broader national efforts to reduce dependency on imported vehicles and components.

Tosyali’s Strategic Steel Expansion

The governor’s subsequent tour of the Tosyali Algérie steel complex in Bethioua revealed even more ambitious industrial plans. The facility’s second direct reduced iron unit (DRI 2) and upcoming expansion for automotive steel sheet production, scheduled for 2026 operation, positions Algeria to potentially become a regional steel hub.

This strategic industrial complex represents a cornerstone in Algeria’s economic diversification efforts, targeting both domestic market needs in construction, industry, and energy sectors while developing export capabilities to regional and international markets.

Broader Economic Implications

The coordinated development between Fiat’s automotive manufacturing and Tosyali’s steel production creates a symbiotic industrial ecosystem. As Tosyali expands its automotive-grade steel capacity, it could potentially supply Fiat’s growing production needs, creating a vertically integrated manufacturing corridor in the Oran region.

These developments occur within Algeria’s broader economic context, where reducing hydrocarbon dependency through industrial development has become a national priority. The presence of multiple government officials and energy sector representatives during the visits indicates cross-ministerial coordination supporting these industrial initiatives.
