Gambia Immigration Department intercepts 76 would-be migrants trying to achieve Europe
The Gambia Immigration Department has intercepted a major group of 76 would-be migrants, together with ladies and youngsters, as they tried to embark on perilous journeys to Europe by sea.
This surge in interceptions coincides with a rising pattern of Gambians leaving their homeland in quest of higher alternatives, pushed by rising unemployment and the escalating value of dwelling.
Among these intercepted had been 46 Gambians, two Guineans, one Nigerian, one Sierra Leonean, in addition to people from Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. The group included minors and two ladies.
At a latest information convention, GID spokesman Siman Lowe detailed the division’s operations, highlighting a serious interception at Barra the place 52 migrants had been apprehended.
“Our officers at the Barra post intercepted 25 individuals believed to be preparing for departure,” Lowe acknowledged. “This operation followed a tip-off regarding imminent departures of suspected migrants within The Gambia. During this operation, we seized 48 gallons of fuel, one boat, a Yamaha engine, and various food supplies.”
In a separate incident, one other vessel carrying 25 would-be migrants was intercepted in Gunjur-Sabuya, situated within the Kombo South space.
The ongoing efforts by the Gambia Immigration Department underscore the challenges confronted by many within the area as they search safer and extra affluent futures overseas.
