France’s Court of Appeal delivered a decisive verdict on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, upholding the conviction of far-right leader Marine Le Pen for the misuse of European Parliament funds. The ruling effectively bars her from running in the 2027 presidential election, a contest she had been widely expected to lead.

The court’s decision confirms the five-year ban from holding elected office that was imposed by a Paris criminal court in March 2025. That original conviction also included a sentence of two years’ house arrest under electronic bracelet and a fine against her National Rally party.

The Core of the Case

The charges stem from a scheme that operated between 2004 and 2016. The Paris criminal court had ruled that Le Pen was at the center of what it described as a fraudulent system used by her party to divert European Parliament funds worth 2.9 million euros ($3.32 million).

EU lawmakers receive allocated funds to cover expenses, including the salaries of parliamentary assistants. Prosecutors argued that Le Pen and other party members used this money to pay employees who were actually working for the political party itself, rather than performing legitimate parliamentary duties. Le Pen and her party have consistently denied the accusations, contending that the funds were used legitimately and that prosecutors applied an overly narrow definition of what a parliamentary assistant’s role entails.

Le Pen was ordered to stand trial in 2023, following a seven-year investigation, alongside more than two dozen other defendants. The National Rally party was also fined 2 million euros ($2.29 million), half of which was suspended.

What the Ruling Means for the 2027 Election

France’s next presidential election is scheduled with a first round on April 18, 2027, and a run-off on May 2. With the five-year ban from office now upheld, Le Pen cannot appear on the ballot. The far-right leader had previously stated that even if the court only upheld the order for her to wear an electronic bracelet, she would not stand. In an interview with LCI channel on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, she said, “If I can be a candidate, I will be a candidate, provided that I am able to campaign. Because if I’m allowed to be a candidate but am effectively prevented from campaigning freely, then you understand that wouldn’t be possible.”

With Le Pen sidelined, attention now turns to her 30-year-old protege, Jordan Bardella, who is widely expected to take her place as the National Rally’s candidate.

Legal Paths Still Open

Le Pen has vowed to continue fighting the verdict. “If I cannot be a candidate, I will make use of every available avenue of appeal,” she said. Her next option is to take the case to France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation. That court does not re-examine the facts of the case but instead reviews whether the lower courts applied the law correctly. Legal observers note that the Court of Cassation could take approximately six months to hear the case and issue a verdict.

Legal experts had indicated before the appeal ruling that an outright overturning of the conviction appeared unlikely, given the strength of the findings at first instance. The appeal court had three broad options: overturn the conviction entirely, uphold it in full, or uphold the conviction but soften the sentence. By confirming the five-year ban, the court has chosen the path that most directly impacts Le Pen’s political future.

What was Le Pen convicted of?

If the ban from public office had been lifted or shortened to two years or less, the door to a presidential bid would have remained open. That did not happen.

What were the political implications of the verdict?

The ruling reshapes the field for the 2027 election. Le Pen, a prominent figure in European far-right politics, had been a frontrunner in opinion polls to succeed centrist President Emmanuel Macron. With her candidacy now blocked, the National Rally will likely pivot to Bardella, while other candidates across the political spectrum recalibrate their strategies for the race ahead.
