Two U.S. service members were killed in action, and another remains missing after Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks targeted American military positions in Jordan during a coordinated assault on Friday.
A coordinated Iranian attack on U.S. military positions in Jordan has left two American service members dead, one missing, and four others wounded, according to a Saturday statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The assault, which involved ballistic missiles and drones, struck on Friday, July 17, marking one of the deadliest single incidents for U.S. forces in the region since the broader confrontation with Tehran escalated.
Four additional American troops were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for treatment before being discharged, while several others sustained minor injuries and have since returned to active duty, according to U.S. Central Command.
Casualties and Response
The latest attack pushes U.S. military casualties in the conflict to 16 dead and more than 430 wounded, highlighting the escalating human cost of the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
In its statement, CENTCOM confirmed that the four wounded service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan, where they received treatment and have since been discharged. Several other troops who sustained minor injuries were evaluated and have returned to duty. The command withheld the identities of the fallen, saying it would release additional information 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
Iran has suspended its commitments under a recent interim agreement and issued fresh threats against the United States, as both sides continue exchanging strikes on military and strategic targets across the Middle East.
The missing service member has not been identified, and CENTCOM did not disclose the exact locations of the targeted bases or provide further operational details about the attack.

With these latest casualties, at least 16 U.S. service members have now been killed since the conflict began, while more than 430 others have been wounded in attacks across the region. The confrontation between Washington and Tehran has continued to widen, with both countries exchanging strikes against military installations, surveillance facilities, logistics infrastructure, underground weapons depots, and maritime assets.
CENTCOM Intensifies Operations
Earlier on Saturday, CENTCOM announced that U.S. forces had carried out a seventh consecutive night of strikes against Iranian military targets. According to the command, the latest operations struck surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage facilities, and maritime capabilities in an effort to degrade Iran’s military capacity.
Strategic Flashpoints and Regional Risks
One of the conflict’s major flashpoints remains the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which nearly one-fifth of global crude oil supplies are transported. Continued fighting around the area has heightened fears of disruptions to global energy markets and broader economic instability.
