Osaka Ends Sabalenka’s Wimbledon Run in Straight-Sets Upset

Naomi Osaka delivered a commanding performance on Centre Court Sunday, defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in her career. The 14th seed, who had lost to Sabalenka three times already in 2026, turned the tables with a display of power and composure that left the top seed searching for answers.

Osaka avenged a straight-sets defeat to Sabalenka in the French Open last 16 just weeks ago. That loss in Paris was part of a difficult head-to-head run for the Japanese star, who had dropped all three previous meetings this year—on hard courts at Indian Wells and on clay in both Madrid and Roland Garros. Sunday’s victory snapped that streak and ended Sabalenka’s bid for a 15th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearance.

A Decisive First Set

Osaka seized control early, breaking Sabalenka in the third game with a blistering backhand that fizzed past the Belarusian. From the baseline, Osaka’s fierce ground strokes rattled Sabalenka to the point where the world number one let out an anguished scream after being broken for a second time. The set closed 6-2, with Sabalenka struggling to find any rhythm.

Known for being unsettled by windy conditions, Sabalenka appeared out of sorts throughout the opening set and left the court for a break before the second set began. The pattern continued in the second set, where Sabalenka repeatedly banged her racquet against her head in frustration as Osaka pushed the set to a tie-break.

Tie-Break Mastery Reversed

Sabalenka had won her last 21 tie-breaks at Grand Slams, a remarkable run that seemed to give her an edge. But Osaka was unfazed, powering through the tie-break 7-2 to close out the match. The victory was especially sweet for Osaka, who had lost to Sabalenka three times in a row. “That really sucked. I wanted to have the opportunity to overturn that,” Osaka said after the match.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has not won a major since the 2021 Australian Open. Her resurgence under coach Tomasz Wiktorowski—who previously mentored Iga Swiatek—has been building since a semi-final run at the US Open last year. At Wimbledon, she has yet to drop a set across her opening four matches.

Fashion and Focus

Osaka’s walk-on outfits have drawn attention throughout the tournament, including a kimono, a bomber jacket with a long train, and a cloak resembling an open kimono. The 28-year-old believes the conversation around her haute couture has taken pressure off her tennis. On Sunday, she paired a memorable outfit with a performance that left Sabalenka’s challenge in tatters.

Osaka credited her mother’s home-cooking, noting that her mother was watching from the players’ box. “She cooks a lot. I feel like her cooking is powering me. I would like another meal tonight. She cooks a lot of Japanese food,” Osaka said.

What’s Next

Osaka will face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals for a place in the last four. For Sabalenka, the loss continues a pattern of unexpected exits at major tournaments. She lost in the semi-finals on each of her past three visits to Wimbledon and has never made the final. Earlier this year, she suffered a surprise loss to Diana Shnaider in the French Open quarter-finals.

“For me, this court is so special. This is the first match I’ve won on this court. It means a lot,” Osaka said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had so much fun on the court, and to do it here really means a lot.”
