Archaeologists working at a rock shelter in northern Malawi identified almost 13,000 animal bone fragments spanning about 21,000 years and argue the evidence points to intensive local hunting and a social boundary maintained without persistent violence. The authors say the findings challenge the view that cultural boundaries in the distant past formed mainly along coasts.

Olympe Bhêly-Quenum, the Beninese novelist whose work helped shape African literature in French, turns 100 this year. His novels, including Un piège sans fin and Le Chant du lac, explored individual destinies and social tensions rather than direct colonial critique. His career placed him at the centre of intellectual debates during the independence years, circulating through Présence Africaine and journals that crossed former colonial borders.
A researcher at the French Institute of International Relations argues that overlapping mineral certification schemes in the Great Lakes region have not stopped conflict minerals from being traded. Thierry Vircoulon points to uninspected mine classifications, smuggling through Rwanda and auditor conflicts of interest as persistent weaknesses. He concludes certification is at best one tool of mining governance, not a remedy for the conflict minerals problem.
Research published in July 2026 estimates that 2,000 to 5,000 tonnes of natural uranium left the Democratic Republic of Congo inside cobalt hydroxide cargoes between 2000 and 2024, with less than 10 percent declared to the IAEA. The DRC has since launched a verification campaign to test uranium content in cobalt exports and will consult the nuclear watchdog.
King Sunny Adé turns 80 this year, closing in on six decades of shaping Nigerian jùjú music and carrying it to international audiences. Born in Òṣogbo in 1946, he built his own bands, label and a Grammy-nominated run with Island Records, while keeping Yoruba rhythms, talking drums and oral traditions at the centre of his sound.
Cameroonian philosopher Fabien Eboussi Boulaga, who lived from 1934 to 2018, built his work around a single persistent question: from where can an African intellectual speak without becoming the representative of a power, an ideology or a fixed identity? Writing in The Conversation, researcher Christophe Premat traces that question through Eboussi Boulaga's break with the Jesuits in 1980, his 1977 book on the crisis of the Muntu, and his 1993 essay on the "exotic intellectual". Premat argues the philosopher's insistence on interrogating the categories used in the name of emancipation keeps his thinking current.
Recent reports from Mali highlight two major concerns: growing difficulty in accessing meat due to rising prices and supply shortages, with sector stakeholders proposing solutions, and an alarm raised by international human rights groups over pressures on freedom of expression. The FIDH and the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders are calling for better protection of critical voices.
A young woman, Fadima Konaté, was killed by lightning on August 26 while working at an artisanal gold mining site in Mandiana, Guinea. Despite workers turning off phones and placing them under a tree, she was struck while washing mud. The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of miners to weather hazards during the rainy season.
A helicopter crash in Kenya kills seven, including Ecuador's intelligence chief. Nigeria's president orders a new five-year defence strategy, a South African activist defends a controversial partnership, a US court clears the end of TPS for Ethiopians, and the Probo Koala disaster still resonates 20 years on.
