The West Africa News Agency (WANA) is an independent news organisation reporting on the West African sub-region — the 16 countries of West Africa — and their place in the wider African continent and the world. We cover the region as a geography, not as the membership of any bloc, so our journalism follows West Africa and its people wherever the story leads.
WANA is editorially independent. It is not affiliated with, controlled by, or funded by any political party, government, or regional bloc, and our news priorities are set by the public interest alone.
Our Purpose & Approach
WANA exists to strengthen independent journalism, widen access to reliable information and analysis, and amplify West African perspectives in regional and global conversation. Our coverage is organised into three pillars:
1. Markets & Economy — the people, policies and industries driving the regional economy.
- Business & Finance: regional markets, cross-border trade, and industrial growth.
- Technology & Innovation: the digital economy and the ventures advancing West Africa’s tech ecosystem.
- Agriculture & Food Security: supply chains, sustainable practice, and farming innovation.
2. Regional Affairs — governance, security and the institutions that shape the sub-region.
- Politics & Institutions: national governments across West Africa and the regional bodies that affect them, including ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
- Defence & Security: regional stability, counter-terrorism, and maritime security along the West African corridor.
- Crime & Justice: accountability, the rule of law, and civil liberties.
3. Social Impact & Development — the communities, crises and ideas shaping the region’s future.
- Climate & Environment: the regional impact of climate change, conservation, and the energy transition.
- Education & Health: public health, medical research, and education across the region.
- West African Diaspora: the heritage, migration and contributions of West Africans abroad.
How We Work
WANA publishes a mix of original reporting and analysis alongside content adapted from reputable partners and open-licensed sources. When an article draws on another publisher, we name the original author and credit and link to the source. Our editors apply WANA’s standards to everything we publish.
We use technology to assist the newsroom — helping us source, organise and fact-check material — but editorial judgement and the decision to publish rest with our editors, not with any automated system.
