The Kano State Government has reported an investment of more than ₦928 billion in 1,508 development projects across the state’s 44 local government areas since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf took office. According to the state’s Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, Comrade Nura Ma’aji Sumaila, 799 of those projects have been completed, while the remaining 709 are at various stages of execution.

Sumaila made the disclosure during a press briefing on the administration’s infrastructure and development programmes. He emphasized that the projects span critical sectors, including road infrastructure, urban renewal, transportation, education, healthcare, water supply, security, and other public services. The commissioner framed the investment as part of the government’s commitment to accelerating socio-economic development across the state.

Breakdown of Sectoral Spending

Providing a detailed breakdown, Sumaila said contracts worth approximately ₦169 billion have been awarded for urban renewal initiatives. These include road rehabilitation, drainage construction, and other infrastructure upgrades within the Kano metropolis.

In a move aimed at improving connectivity and opening up rural communities to economic activities, the administration is constructing five-kilometre roads in 38 local government areas. Those contracts are valued at more than ₦118 billion.

On security, the government approved contracts exceeding ₦6.8 billion for the construction of Kano State Neighbourhood Watch divisions in 36 local government areas. Sumaila described this as an effort to strengthen community-based security and improve public safety.

The largest single category of spending, according to the commissioner, is rural infrastructure. Projects covering education, healthcare, and other social amenities across all 44 local government areas account for more than ₦397 billion. Additional ongoing projects are valued at over ₦255 billion.

Excluded Projects and Oversight

Sumaila clarified that the ₦928 billion figure does not include 619 constituency projects currently being implemented through members of the Kano State House of Assembly in the state’s 44 local government areas. This distinction suggests the total scope of government-backed development work in the state is even larger than the headline figure suggests.

The commissioner stressed that the Ministry of Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and value for money. He said this is achieved through rigorous monitoring of all government projects and strict compliance with approved engineering standards.

“The Ministry for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation remains committed to ensuring value for money and quality project delivery through effective monitoring of all developmental projects across Kano State,” Sumaila said.

Stakeholder Support and Future Outlook

Sumaila also appreciated stakeholders for their continued support of the Yusuf administration’s development agenda. He assured residents that the government would sustain investments in infrastructure and public services aimed at improving living standards and driving inclusive development across Kano State.

The scale of the reported investment—nearly ₦1 trillion over a period that began with Governor Yusuf’s assumption of office—positions infrastructure and public works as a central pillar of the administration’s record. With more than half of the projects already completed and hundreds more underway, the coming months will test whether the government can maintain its stated commitment to quality delivery and fiscal discipline across such a broad portfolio.
