Former National Assembly president Mamadou Koulibaly has delivered a scathing critique of Côte d’Ivoire’s current governance, contrasting the ruling coalition’s campaign slogan with what he describes as a deteriorating national situation.
In remarks reported by IvoireMatin, Koulibaly said the current leadership inherited an improved environment from their predecessors but is now allowing multiple sectors of public life to decline. His central formula: “They came under the slogan of ‘The Solution’.
Now we have ‘The Problems’.”
Koulibaly, a former political figure who has been critical of successive governments, cited corruption, trafficking, illegal practices, drugs, and the weight of the informal economy as evidence of a degraded governance system.
He also referred to an “institutional entropy” and a climate marked by despair and deep social trauma, accusing policymakers of prioritising appearances and visible achievements over fundamental issues.
The environmental record drew particular attention in his assessment.
Koulibaly questioned the effectiveness of public action in addressing pollution affecting the country’s waterways, noting that several ministerial departments are responsible for water, health, and the environment, yet the situation remains worrying.
He described the state of rivers, streams, and lagoons as part of an “unprecedented catastrophe” in Ivorian public governance.
Koulibaly’s remarks reflect a broader pattern of criticism from opposition figures regarding the country’s development trajectory.
Côte d’Ivoire has experienced significant economic growth over the past decade, but critics have repeatedly pointed to governance challenges, environmental degradation, and social inequalities as persistent concerns.
The former assembly president’s assessment challenges the authorities on the long-term consequences of their policy choices, concluding that the “Solution” promised yesterday has, in his view, given way to the “problems” the country now faces.
