Benin: President Talon Reaches Out to Resignees from LD Party
In a televised interview on Tuesday evening, President Patrice Talon addressed the situation of those who resigned from the Les Démocrates (LD) party, positioning himself to offer them a new path for political expression.
The head of state argued that these former members of Boni Yayi’s party should not be left behind, as they claim to hold ideals capable of serving the nation. He described them as people driven by conviction and characterized their departure from the main opposition party as regrettable.
“It is unfortunate that they resigned. If their ideas cannot thrive in their current group, let their ideal not die,” President Talon declared.
President Talon revealed his plan to create a space for their expression within a broader framework, allowing their convictions to contribute to the national political debate. He announced he would task Minister of State Romuald Wadagni, along with the presidents of the four political groups supporting his actions, to meet with the resignees, listen to their concerns, and understand their ideals.
This initiative is widely seen as a signal of political openness, occurring in a context of shifting alliances ahead of the 2026 presidential election, where the internal balance of the opposition appears more fragile than ever.
