EU Enlargement Report Warns of ‘Authoritarian Drift’ in Georgia

A new European Union enlargement report, published on Tuesday, November 4th, raises alarm over an unprecedented authoritarian drift in Georgia. The document details severe democratic backsliding orchestrated by the ruling Georgian Dream party, citing the dismantling of the rule of law, political control of key institutions, and the imprisonment of opposition leaders.
EU Ambassador to Tbilisi, Paweł Herczyński, described the findings as “devastating.” In Brussels, officials now believe that Georgia’s candidacy to join the European Union is no longer credible. This stark assessment comes amid growing discontent, particularly among the country’s pro-European youth, who are increasingly angry with the executive branch.
