Ghanaian-Born Midfielder Injured in Fan Attack During NPFL Match
Barau FC midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham sustained a serious neck injury after being assaulted by Katsina United supporters during a Nigerian Professional Football League match on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Ghanaian-born player suffered a deep cut to his neck following the attack, which occurred moments after Barau FC equalized against the home side in their Week 12 fixture.
Match Halted Following Violent Incident
Barau FC confirmed the incident on social media platform X, sharing a photograph of the injured player with visible blood on his neck. The club stated: “The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham.”
The violence reportedly erupted shortly after Orji Kalu’s 69th-minute equalizer, which angered sections of the home supporters. Although the match concluded with a 1-1 draw, the disturbing event has renewed concerns about fan behavior and stadium security in the NPFL.
Growing Concerns Over Fan Conduct
This incident follows a recent case where Kano Pillars supporters attacked a referee after 3SC scored a late equalizer in another league fixture, highlighting ongoing security challenges in Nigerian football.
Nana Kwame Abraham joined Barau FC from Nigerien side AS GNN ahead of the 2025/26 NPFL season. Born to a Ghanaian father and Nigerien mother, the energetic midfielder has provided one assist in seven appearances this campaign.
