California Police Fatally Shoot Gambian-American Veteran Abdou Rahman Nyan; Family Demands Transparent Investigation
Gambiaj.com – (Santa Barbara, CA) – The Gambian community in California is in mourning following the death of Abdou Rahman Nyan, a U.S. veteran, National Guardsman, and IT specialist, who was fatally shot by police in Santa Barbara County last week.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBCSO) reported that the incident occurred around 2:39 p.m. at a Ralph’s grocery store on the 5100 block of Hollister Avenue in Goleta.
Deputies stated they attempted to apprehend Nyan in connection with an alleged “assault with a deadly weapon,” which escalated into an officer-involved shooting.
“Deputies contacted the suspect and attempted to apprehend him. An altercation ensued, and the suspect was shot. The deputies were not physically harmed. Abdou Rahman was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said SBCSO Public Information Officer Raquel Zick.
Conflicting Eyewitness Accounts Emerge
However, independent eyewitness accounts reported by Santa Barbara’s News Channel 3 present a different narrative of the events.
Witnesses described an initial confrontation outside the store involving Abdou Rahman, another customer, and a white man armed with a large kitchen knife, with a dog seemingly defending the armed man. Images depicting this scene have since circulated on social media.
The struggle reportedly moved inside the store, prompting frightened shoppers to flee and call 911. Moments later, gunfire erupted, leaving one man dead and another injured. It now appears Nyan was the individual shot by responding officers.
According to his family, Abdou Rahman Nyan was shot six times by police.
Calls for Justice and a Pending Investigation
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into what it described as “a shooting incident involving a deadly weapon that turned into an officer-involved shooting.”
The devastating news was only communicated to Nyan’s family, including his mother, Amie Noho, a well-known member of the Gambian community, nearly a week after the incident.
Members of the Gambian diaspora in California have expressed profound shock and sorrow, remembering Nyan as a gentle, dedicated neighbor and a proud serviceman. Many are now joining the family in demanding a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led to his death.
