From Classroom Teacher to Industry Leader

Allen’s path to entrepreneurship began during her freshman year at West Virginia State University, where work as a childcare assistant ignited her commitment to the field. After a decade as a public-school teacher and running a non-profit providing enrichment for low-income youth, she recognized the need to create her own nurturing learning environment.

While maintaining her teaching career, Allen pursued a Master’s in Public Administration and additional early childhood courses, systematically building the expertise needed to launch her venture. In 2007, she transformed this preparation into reality with the founding of Themba Creative Learning Center.

Overcoming the Scarcity Mindset

The transition from educator to successful business owner required a fundamental shift in perspective. Allen initially operated with what she describes as a “Mom & Pop shop” mentality, which led to significant stress, health concerns, and operational challenges.

A pivotal moment came through mentorship when she discovered industry research revealing childcare as a $60 billion market. This revelation prompted her to professionalize her approach completely—from adopting business attire to implementing structured hiring processes and investing in leadership development.
