Dr. RoDina Williams Becomes Illinois’ First Black Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science

Dr. RoDina L. Williams has been recognized as the first Black person in Illinois to earn a Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS), a significant milestone for representation in a critical healthcare field.
In an interview reflecting on her journey, Dr. Williams highlighted the formative role of her education at Illinois State University, where she discovered a passion for research and the importance of mentorship.
A Foundation Built on Mentorship and Community
Williams began her academic path as a transfer student, initially drawn to the university’s kinesiology program. The sense of community and support from faculty was so impactful that she later returned to complete a second bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science.
She credits specific faculty members with shaping her career, including Dr. Pete Smith, who introduced her to formal research, and Dr. Dale Brown, whose teaching style connected lessons to lived experiences. Her transition into medical laboratory science was further guided by mentors like Dr. Lori Woeste and Dr. Beverly Barham, who encouraged her to pursue advancing opportunities.
A Milestone for Representation
Earning the DCLS degree represents both a personal achievement and a broader responsibility for Dr. Williams. She emphasizes that the accomplishment is about creating visibility and opening doors for future scientists of color in a field where Black professionals remain significantly underrepresented.
“My success is not only a reflection of my hard work but also a testament to the power of representation,” Williams stated, underscoring her commitment to mentorship through involvement with organizations like the Black Colleagues Association at Illinois State.
Balancing Roles and Responsibilities
Outside of her professional duties, Williams strives for balance as a scholar, mother, and advocate. She leads medical laboratory programs at the City Colleges of Chicago, overseeing educational, clinical, and administrative operations while maintaining perspective with her family.

Clinical Laboratory Scientists are vital healthcare professionals who perform and interpret complex tests used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Their work provides up to 70% of objective information in a patient’s medical record, forming the foundation for critical clinical decisions.
The field has historically faced diversity challenges, making Dr. Williams’ achievement particularly significant for inspiring the next generation of laboratory professionals from underrepresented backgrounds.
