Brava Mayor Praises Coast Guard Amid Transport Crisis, Demands Respect for Islanders
Mayor Amândio Brito has publicly commended the Coast Guard detachment serving Brava island, describing their work as crucial during an ongoing maritime transport disruption that has left the island largely isolated.
“Our Salvation” in Crisis
“In this situation of transport disruption, we highlight the commitment and professionalism of this military detachment that has been our salvation,” stated Brito. The mayor emphasized that amid absent regular connections to other islands, the Coast Guard’s collaboration has been vital for emergency medical evacuations and official travel, including the recent departure of Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien from Brava.
Dedication Despite Limitations
Brito described the military’s performance as “an example of public service and dedication to duty,” acknowledging the difficult conditions they work under daily. “Even under inappropriate conditions, they have been tireless, demonstrating an unquestionable commitment to the well-being of our population,” he said.
Frustration Over Neglect
However, the mayor sharply criticized what he called the abandonment and neglect of Brava island, which continues to suffer from lack of regular, safe maritime transport. “It is to be demanded that we are treated as people and as the human beings that we are,” he stated, reflecting the growing frustration among Brava’s residents.
The island has faced near-complete isolation in recent days, with essential product shortages, postponed travel plans, and mounting concerns among residents and emigrants alike. Maritime service interruptions since early November have severely impacted commerce, healthcare, and local tourism.
Call for Action
While awaiting a permanent solution, Mayor Brito’s recognition highlights the importance of institutional cooperation and the urgent need for central government action to ensure Brava’s mobility and dignity.
“Brava cannot continue to be forgotten. We are part of Cape Verde and we deserve the same respect and attention as any other island,” Brito concluded, appealing for national solidarity and concrete measures to restore the island’s normality.
