Burkina Faso’s Leader Calls on Global African Diaspora to Reclaim Continent’s Dignity

In a powerful address that resonated with Pan-African solidarity, Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has issued a clarion call to people of African descent worldwide. Speaking to a delegation of approximately 700 diaspora members in Ouagadougou, Traoré framed his nation’s struggle as part of a broader fight for the soul of the continent.

A Welcome Home and a Call to Arms

The meeting on Friday, November 7, 2025, was a cornerstone of the “Welcome Home” event, a multi-week initiative designed to bridge the gap between the African homeland and its global children. In a significant gesture, President Traoré announced the removal of the financial requirement for obtaining a permanent resident card, effectively rolling out the red carpet for those considering a return.

“We are not fighting for Burkina Faso alone; we are fighting for Africa. We are fighting for Black people. We are fighting for Africa’s dignity,” Traoré declared, his words cutting to the heart of a renewed push for sovereignty. He positioned Burkina Faso’s resistance against imperialism as a frontline in a continental battle, urging all freedom-loving peoples to join the cause.

Beyond Symbolism: Investment and Integration

The appeal went beyond rhetoric. The Burkinabé head of state presented concrete investment opportunities across multiple sectors, promising tangible support for viable economic projects. This move signals a strategic understanding that true liberation and dignity are built on a foundation of economic self-sufficiency and development.

The delegation, which included descendants of Africans from the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, had been in the country since October 26, immersing themselves in the culture and exploring avenues for collaboration. Their presence underscores a growing movement among the diaspora to reconnect with their ancestral roots in a meaningful, lasting way.

A Visionary Leader’s Appeal

Speaking on behalf of the visitors, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, a prominent voice for African unity, lauded Captain Traoré’s leadership. She described him as the first contemporary head of state to officially and passionately call for the African diaspora to return to their roots through his “Back to your roots” message.

This event marks a significant moment in modern Pan-African relations. It raises a critical question: Can the combined strength of Africans on the continent and in the diaspora forge a new path toward true liberation? For the hundreds gathered in Ouagadougou and for leaders like Traoré, the answer is a resounding yes. The struggle, as he made clear, is for dignity, and the invitation to join it is now officially open.
