Enugu Governor Pledges Ambitious Drive for Crash-Free Highways

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has declared a bold new ambition for the region’s roadways: to position the state as Nigeria’s leader in achieving crash-free highways. This vision, the governor asserts, will be realized through a multi-pronged strategy combining technology, enforcement, and community engagement.

A Multi-Faceted Safety Blueprint

Governor Mbah detailed the plan during his keynote address at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 2025 Enugu Sectoral Workshop for Special Marshals. The state’s approach hinges on fully funded joint operations, significant technological upgrades including the deployment of AI-powered cameras, and a series of community town halls designed to foster public compliance with safety regulations.

“I have pledged and will deliver unwavering support to FRSC initiatives,” Mbah stated, underscoring his administration’s commitment. This support package ranges from providing legislative backing for stricter enforcement to supplying state-of-the-art patrol vehicles and enhancing tech-driven surveillance through the Enugu Security Trust Fund.

Early Gains and Sustained Momentum

The governor pointed to tangible, early progress as a sign that the goal is within reach. He revealed that the state’s massive ongoing project to reconstruct over 1,000 kilometers of roads has already yielded a 25 percent reduction in road crashes along critical corridors like the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

But with progress comes the need for persistence. “We cannot relent,” Mbah emphasized, signaling that the initial success only strengthens the resolve to push further. The administration views road safety not as a one-off project, but as a continuous, evolving mission.

Commending Frontline Efforts

Governor Mbah also took a moment to commend the FRSC’s Enugu State Command for its performance, acknowledging the corps for meeting expectations in ensuring road safety and providing prompt emergency responses to accidents. This recognition of frontline personnel highlights the collaborative spirit deemed essential for the ambitious target.
