From November 2 to 9, 2025, the projection and command ship Tonnerre made a strategic stopover in Benin, signaling a significant advancement in military collaboration between the two nations.
The visit was part of the regional operation CORYMBE, aimed at bolstering maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, a region plagued by piracy, illicit activities, and unregulated fishing.
During the stopover, joint training exercises, including the anti-terrorism drill Zangbeto 2025, were carried out by Beninese and French units. Activities such as beach reconnaissance maneuvers, firefighting drills, helicopter operations, and tactical landings provided valuable training opportunities for non-commissioned officer students from the National Non-Commissioned Officers School and the Logistics Academy in Ouidah.
The presence of the Tonnerre was commended by military and diplomatic officials, including Rear Admiral Fernand Ahoyo and French Ambassador Nadège Chouat. The ship also opened its doors to the public, allowing them to explore its facilities and engage with the crew.
This mission exemplifies the joint commitment of Benin and France to enhance their security partnership, with a specific focus on counterterrorism efforts and ensuring a secure maritime environment in the Gulf of Guinea.
However, this collaboration has raised concerns in neighboring Niger, which perceives it as a threat to its territorial integrity, leading to the decision to maintain closed land borders with Benin.
