Fuel shortage in Mali

To combat the ongoing fuel shortage in Mali, resourceful young citizens have adopted a unique strategy: the gasoline tontine. This system involves participants pooling their money to completely fill a vehicle’s tank at the gas station.

The fuel is then emptied and distributed equally among members, based on a pre-established list. The method mirrors the traditional “beef tontine” commonly practiced during Ramadan, showcasing community adaptation to the fuel scarcity.
