Gas Explosion in Constantine Garage Injures Two, Causes Significant Structural Damage
Emergency Response Prevents Further Catastrophe in Residential Area
A gas explosion originating from a vehicle inside a Constantine garage resulted in two injuries and substantial property damage on Tuesday evening, according to Civil Protection officials.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:37 PM at 155 Moumni Rabeh Street in the Ain Smara municipality, where a gas leak from a car parked in a residential building’s garage triggered the blast. The building, consisting of a ground floor and two upper floors, sustained significant structural damage from the explosion.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Two male victims required immediate medical attention following the explosion. A 51-year-old man who was inside the garage at the time of the blast suffered second-degree burns across his body, while a 28-year-old male passerby sustained a head injury and suspected leg fracture.
Civil Protection units from the Ain Smara district secondary unit responded promptly to the emergency, administering first aid to both individuals before transporting them to Harrecha Ammar Hospital for further treatment.
Extensive Material Damage
The explosion caused widespread destruction to both vehicles and property. Three vehicles sustained significant damage, including one car that experienced partial interior burning, a second vehicle crushed by a collapsing partition wall, and a third car parked beside the building with roof damage.
The blast also destroyed storage room doors—including one belonging to an adjacent building—and shattered balcony windows and glass in both the affected building and its neighbor.
Coordinated Emergency Operation
The response operation was conducted under the supervision of the Director of Civil Protection for Constantine province and the head of the Ain Smara district secondary unit. Representatives from Sonelgaz were also present to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the gas network infrastructure.
Civil Protection deployed substantial resources to contain the situation, including two ambulances, a fire truck, and 12 personnel of various ranks. According to the Information and Communication Cell of the Constantine Civil Protection Directorate, the rapid intervention successfully prevented the flames from spreading to other parts of the building.
Safety Implications and Prevention
This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with vehicle gas systems in residential areas. The explosion serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of gas-powered vehicles, particularly when parked in enclosed residential spaces.
While the quick response prevented greater tragedy, the event underscores the need for public awareness about gas safety protocols and emergency preparedness in residential communities.
