Hungary: Viktor Orban’s Clan Seizes Control of Popular Tabloid ‘Blikk’

In Hungary, sovereigntist Prime Minister Viktor Orban is tightening his grip on the press just five months ahead of legislative elections. Following the takeover of public broadcasting and roughly 500 private media outlets, Orban has now acquired Hungary’s largest daily newspaper through a loyalist.

The purchase targets Blikk, a highly popular tabloid previously owned by the Swiss group Ringier. Known for its crime coverage and reports on corruption within the ruling party, Blikk’s print edition sells tens of thousands of copies daily, making it a significant new asset for the Orban government’s media empire.
