Mily Clément Announces Tour Dates Across Mayotte
The singer-songwriter from Mahavavy has confirmed he will perform across Mayotte this November, with concerts scheduled for the 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd.
A Long-Awaited Return
In a recent Facebook video, Clément announced his arrival on “Mahoran soil,” promising audiences a series of energetic performances. “It’s going to be hot!” he declared. This tour marks a significant moment for the artist’s Mahoran fans, who have waited years for his return.
Classic Salegy and Timeless Hits
For five days, the sounds of classic salegy will resonate across the island. Clément is set to perform his legendary tracks, including “Mandrra mantsilagny” and other hits from the 1980s and 1990s. The nostalgic anthem “Mahavavy mahangoma” is sure to evoke memories for the diaspora.
Mily Clément was a defining voice in the second half of the 1980s. A peerless music lover, he masterfully blended rock, reggae, salegy, and funk. This fusion created timeless classics like “Mifankatiava,” a track that remains popular with both original fans and younger generations, inspiring numerous covers.
Shared Culture and Language
The artist’s connection to Mayotte runs deep. Many in the older generation are familiar with his work from holidays spent in northern Madagascar, his artistic stronghold. His voice has transcended the borders of Madagascar, echoing throughout the South-West Indian Ocean.
This cultural bridge is strengthened by language; over 30% of Mahorans speak the northern Sakalava dialect, allowing Clément’s message to be conveyed smoothly. Despite the 300 kilometers separating them, Mayotte and Madagascar share musical structures, which is why Malagasy people identify with M’godro and Mahorans are transported by Malagasy salegy.
More Than a Performance
This tour is more than a series of concerts; it is an intention to further weave this cultural link. For those feeling nostalgic, the music will recall a bygone era of Renault 4Ls and canvas-topped Peugeot 404s. For the homesick and locals alike, it will be a chance to savor every note composed by the virtuoso from Ankarabe.
