Youth Power Digital Voter Surge

South Africans are increasingly turning to technology as they prepare for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) reports a significant surge in voter registration, signalling a growing engagement, particularly among young citizens eager to influence the nation’s future.
Data from January to September 2025 shows more than 305,000 new voters have been registered.
A further 60,752 citizens updated their registration details during this period.
The commission views these figures as a positive step toward greater civic involvement, driven by more accessible processes.
Youth Voter Registration in 2026 Grows Online
The IEC’s latest data confirms that most voters now register through digital platforms.
A breakdown shows 76% of new registrations were captured using Voter Management Devices, 12% via the online portal, and only 10% in person at IEC offices.
This trend highlights how young, first-time voters are spearheading the move toward technology-driven democratic participation.
The commission has committed to continuing its system modernization to make registration faster and more accessible for all eligible voters.
Digital Democracy in South Africa Takes Shape
The IEC is reminding voters to register in the district where they reside to ensure they vote at the correct station.
With the Municipal Demarcation Board finalising new ward boundaries, which may alter some voting districts, the commission urges those who have moved to update their details online or at an IEC office.
Citizens are encouraged to check their registration status well ahead of the polls to avoid any confusion.
Voter Education Outreach Ahead of 2026 Local Government Elections
Parallel to registration drives, the commission has intensified its civic education programmes, reaching millions of South Africans.
In the second quarter of 2025 alone, IEC teams hosted over 18,000 community events, engaging more than 2.6 million people across all nine provinces.
These initiatives aim to foster responsible citizenship and prepare first-time voters for the 2026 elections.
Your Vote, Your Power
As preparations intensify, the IEC continues to host workshops to guide political parties and independent candidates.
Embracing the spirit of digital democracy, citizens can easily register or confirm their details at registertovote.elections.org.za.
The online process takes just minutes and is designed to work smoothly on any device.
The IEC believes that while every vote counts, young South Africans have the potential to make the greatest impact in shaping the country’s democratic path by registering and voting in 2026.
