Guinea: General Doumbouya Submits Candidacy for Presidential Election
Guinea’s Supreme Court is preparing to release the official list of approved candidates for the presidential election on November 13. The military leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, formally submitted his candidacy to the court on Monday for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 28.
This move marks a significant reversal for the general, who led a coup against former President Alpha Condé four years ago. At that time, he had committed to returning power to civilians after a transition period. However, following recent demands from his supporters for his participation, General Doumbouya has now decided to run.
The decision has been met with sharp criticism from the opposition, which has labeled it a “power grab.” Alongside the junta leader, approximately ten other contenders have also submitted their candidacies for the country’s top office.
Notably absent from the race are major opposition figures, including former president Alpha Condé, Cellou Dalein Diallo, and Sidya Touré. They have been barred from running due to either the presidential age limit or a provision requiring candidates to be present on national territory, as they are all currently living in exile.
