National Assembly members bear finances scrutiny coaching
The Gambian National Assembly Members (NAMs) and technical workers of the Assembly have launched into a three-day pre-budget retreat following the presentation of the 2025 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure by the Minister of Finance.
Supported by International IDEA and the European Union (EU), the coaching is geared toward strengthening fiscal oversight and useful resource allocation capabilities.
Clerk of the National Assembly, Momodou Sise, confused the significance of finances scrutiny.
“Honourable Members should interrogate the draft estimates to make sure they replicate the aspirations of the residents.
“The outcomes of this training will also enable effective monitoring of appropriated funds through oversight mechanisms during the implementation year.”
The initiative is a part of a broader collaboration with International IDEA and the EU to bolster The Gambia’s democratic establishments. Ms Jainaba Faye, Country director for International IDEA, highlighted the coaching’s objective.
She mentioned: “The main goal is to strengthen the oversight function of the National Assembly and its Committees to deliver an expanded economy focused on creating greater national wealth and better livelihoods.”
Similarly, the EU Ambassador to The Gambia, Immaculada Roca I Cortes, reiterated the EU’s dedication to institutional improvement.
“By strengthening the National Assembly’s role in budget oversight, we ensure a more inclusive and sustainable future for all,” she mentioned.
In his opening assertion, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of the National Assembly, referred to as on lawmakers to actively interact throughout the retreat.
“Our duty is to safeguard public funds, ensure social equity, and promote economic stability.”
