Two young “repeat offenders” known in the field of theft were sentenced by the Kaloum Court of First Instance this Tuesday, November 4, 2025. They are Aboubacar Sidiki Barry, alias “DK,” and Ibrahima Sory Camara, both prosecuted for stealing a phone belonging to Sékou Amadou Sylla, a neighbor of the defendants and the civil party in this case. The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges against them, specifying that they resold the phone, which cost 2 million Guinean francs, for 400,000 Guinean francs, Guineematin.com noted through one of its reporters.

In his testimony, Aboubacar Sidiki Barry explained how he stole the phone.

“I found the phone on a parked vehicle near the Kaloum court. It’s a phone that costs 2 million Guinean francs. But, when we picked up the phone, we went and sold it for 400 thousand Guinean francs,” he stated at the stand.

Continuing his narrative, he implied to the court that he took money from the victim’s hands to make the latter believe that he would conduct the investigation.

“While conducting the investigation, the owner, Mr. Sékou Sylla, came to ask me if I had seen his phone. I said I hadn’t seen it. I told him I would help him find his phone. He first gave me 100 thousand Guinean francs for my transport, then 200 thousand Guinean francs to go to Madina to conduct the investigation. But, it turned out we had already sold the phone,” he admitted.

Similarly, Ibrahima Sory Camara reiterated that “the phone was sold in Madina for 400 thousand Guinean francs.”

For his part, the victim Sékou Amadou Sylla, a merchant by profession, explained to the court the circumstances under which he recovered his phone.

“When I explained the problem to DK, he asked me for money to go and search at the Madina market. He asked me for money 4 times to go to Madina to conduct the investigation, while the two of them were holding the phone. They are the ones who stole the phone from my place. We are neighbors. It was when they were arrested, at the DPJ (Judicial Police), that someone came and gave me the phone at night. I found that they had completely unlocked the phone,” he explained.

Following these various testimonies, the public prosecutor asked the court to sentence Aboubacar Sidiki Barry and Ibrahima Sory Camara to 2 years and one year of imprisonment, respectively.

“The complainant’s residence is adjacent to that of the defendant Aboubacar Sidiki Barry. The phone he was looking for was in his neighbor’s hands. But he did not want to return the phone. This is precisely why we ask you to reclassify the complicity as theft. They acted together to steal the phone and resell it at a paltry price. We ask you to sentence Aboubacar Sidiki Barry to 2 years in prison. He doesn’t know how to do anything except steal from his neighbors. He is a bad neighbor. For Ibrahima Sory Camara, sentence him to one year in prison. The public prosecutor is counting on you to clean up the area around the court,” requested prosecutor Issouf Fofana.

Finally, the court found the defendants guilty of the theft charges against them and sentenced each to 6 months in prison.
