As the rainy season peaks in Burkina Faso, a Ouagadougou-based association has launched a malaria screening and prevention campaign targeting the youngest and most vulnerable residents.
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Laafi Sans Frontières organized a free screening and awareness-raising event in the capital, with a focus on children aged 0 to 5.
According to Aboubacar Konfé, head of the association, the initiative included free tests and the distribution of medication to those who tested positive.
“We are here this morning for a malaria screening and medication distribution campaign, especially prioritizing children from zero to five years old,” Konfé said.
Beyond testing, the association placed strong emphasis on prevention. Participants were encouraged to keep their surroundings clean, avoid stagnant water, sleep under mosquito nets, and wear covering clothing to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

“Awareness-raising itself is more important. We must always sensitize people,” Konfé insisted.
For those who tested positive, medication was provided free of charge. Those who tested negative received additional advice on how to protect themselves from the disease.

The initiative was well received by beneficiaries. Abdoulaye Barry welcomed the opportunity to get tested and access care quickly, but expressed hope that future operations could also include the distribution of mosquito nets to strengthen prevention among vulnerable households.
Laafi Sans Frontières acknowledged that providing mosquito nets remains a need.
For now, the association is concentrating its efforts on testing, screening, medication donations, and awareness-raising, with plans to continue its grassroots work to reduce malaria risks, particularly during the rainy season.
