The threat of a nationwide strike hangs over Guinean education. The Education Union Alliance, composed of FSPE, SLECG, and SNE, filed a strike notice this Wednesday, November 5th, covering the entire national territory.
This decision comes amid ongoing tensions between the government and representatives of the teaching profession.
According to the strike notice, this action is based on the legal provisions in force in Guinea, as well as International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions 87 and 98, ratified by Guinea since 1959.
The Education Union Alliance accuses the government of “its refusal to open negotiations regarding the list of demands submitted on September 1st, 2025, despite several calls made by the General Secretaries; and the failure to honor the promise made to the municipal contract teachers who were not retained and those in the special zone of Conakry for their commitment.”
Stating its concern to preserve the climate of peace and social tranquility, the Education Union Alliance calls on the government to “open negotiations without delay and satisfy the points contained in the list of demands from September 1st, 2025.”
The Union Alliance gives the government an ultimatum of ten (10) days, starting from the receipt of the notice, to provide a satisfactory response.
After this deadline, the representatives of the teaching profession “reserve the right to launch a general and unlimited strike across the entire national territory.”
This new strike threat comes just as the school year has barely begun.
