Sierra Leone international Abu Dumbuya logged 87 minutes in his second league start for Saudi First Division side Al Jeel, but the club’s winless start to the 2026/27 season continued with a 1-0 away loss.
The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, who joined Al Jeel earlier this month, has now started both of the club’s opening fixtures. Al Jeel began its campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Al Zulfi SC on Aug. 21, a match in which Dumbuya also featured from the first whistle.
Dumbuya’s Path to Al Jeel
Born in Freetown on Jan. 29, 1999, Dumbuya arrived in Saudi Arabia after a short spell with Finnish Veikkausliiga side AC Oulu, where he made nine league appearances earlier in 2026. His international career includes 21 caps for Sierra Leone since his debut in 2019, and he was part of the Leone Stars squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
On the international stage, Dumbuya scored during 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification, netting against Chad in November 2024. Domestically, he won a national championship with East End Lions in Sierra Leone and has also played for Gençlik Gücü in Northern Cyprus.
Al Jeel’s Early-Season Struggles
Based in Al Ahsa and playing home matches at Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium, Al Jeel remains without a point after two rounds. The club’s next opportunity to change that comes at home against Jeddah Club on Sept. 1.
While the season is still young, the pattern of narrow defeats suggests Al Jeel’s immediate priority will be tightening its defensive organization. Dumbuya’s presence in midfield should help in that regard, given his defensive-minded role and international experience.
For Dumbuya, the extended minutes are a positive sign of his integration into the squad. Having already started two consecutive matches, he appears to be a regular part of the starting lineup under the current coaching staff.
