In a development that signals a potential shift in the region’s illicit drug trade, Gambian authorities have arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian national in possession of thousands of ecstasy tablets and equipment believed to be used for drug manufacturing. The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) described the seizure as a significant milestone in its ongoing operations.
Arrest and Seizure Details
The suspect, identified as Celestine Ikenna Godwin, was taken into custody on Monday. According to DLEAG Spokesperson Dawda Sanyang, the arrest yielded 9,020 ecstasy tablets and a quantity of suspected skunk. More notably, officers also recovered a machine suspected to be used for the manufacturing and processing of illicit drugs.
Sanyang told The Standard that this discovery marks the first time the agency has encountered such equipment within The Gambia. He noted that the find raises serious concerns about the potential establishment of local clandestine laboratories for the production of synthetic drugs, highlighting the evolving nature of the region’s drug-trafficking threat.

The seizure, which includes both the drugs and the processing equipment, demonstrates DLEAG’s determination to disrupt not only the movement of illicit drugs into the country but also any attempt to establish facilities for drug production, Sanyang added.
