A deadly robbery attack in the Shagari village area of Akure, Ondo State, has claimed the life of a 47-year-old local technician, Idris Clement, a father of five. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, around 1 a.m., when a group of armed men invaded the neighbourhood, attacking residents and stealing their belongings.
Attack Details
According to AbdulFatai Clement, one of the deceased’s sons, the robbers first attacked his father with axes and cutlasses. One of the assailants then produced a gun and shot him. The robbers fled the scene immediately after Clement collapsed. Family members rushed him to a hospital, but he had lost a significant amount of blood. Doctors later confirmed him dead at the facility.
Police Response and Investigation
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, told journalists that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder. The suspect is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID) of the command.
Jimoh assured the bereaved family and residents of the area that all those found culpable in the incident would face the full weight of the law.
Context and Implications
The killing highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Ondo State, where residents in semi-urban and rural areas remain vulnerable to armed robbery. The swift arrest of a suspect suggests police are moving to address the case, though questions remain about broader preventive measures in the community. For the Clement family, the loss of a breadwinner and father of five adds a layer of economic hardship to their grief.
As the investigation continues at the SCID, residents of Shagari village will be watching closely to see whether the police follow through on their promise of accountability.
