Nigeria’s re-entry into the World Energy Council (WEC) has been welcomed by the Association of Energy Correspondents, Abuja (AECAF), which sees the move as a significant step for the country’s role in global energy discussions. The association, representing editors and reporters covering oil, gas, and broader energy issues in Abuja and the northern region, issued a statement congratulating the newly appointed leadership of WEC Nigeria.
New Leadership at the Helm
AECAF extended its congratulations to Mr. Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, on his appointment as Chairman of the World Energy Council Nigeria, and to Mr. Bala Wunti, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer. The association also acknowledged the members of the inaugural Board, noting that their combined expertise across the energy sector, finance, academia, regulatory institutions, and professional associations provides a strong foundation for the Council’s work.
Isa’s appointment was praised for his contributions to indigenous refining and industrial development, which have helped strengthen local participation in Nigeria’s energy sector. AECAF said his leadership reflects confidence in his entrepreneurial vision and commitment to advancing the country’s energy aspirations.
Wunti, with more than three decades of experience in the energy industry, was commended for his expertise in strategy, policy formulation, revenue optimisation, and sectoral reform. The association said these skills would support the Council’s efforts and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s energy sector.
A Timely Return to a Global Network
AECAF described Nigeria’s return to the World Energy Council as timely and significant, restoring the country’s place within one of the world’s leading energy networks. The membership, the association said, offers Nigeria an opportunity to contribute to global discussions on energy security, affordability, sustainability, and equitable energy transition.
Beyond dialogue, AECAF noted that the development could help Nigeria attract investment, deepen international partnerships, promote innovation, and strengthen Africa’s voice in global energy conversations. The association also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the leadership and support that ensured Nigeria’s return to the Council.

AECAF said it looks forward to building a productive relationship with WEC Nigeria and pledged to continue supporting informed public dialogue and greater understanding of the policies, investments, and innovations needed to secure Nigeria’s energy future. The association wished Isa, Wunti, and the inaugural Board success in their new responsibilities.
