In the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026, a bridge collapse in central Benin turned a routine motorcycle ride into a life-threatening ordeal. Two people—a motorcycle taxi driver and his passenger—were rescued from the water after the Lifo bridge gave way on the Aklampa-Glazoué axis in the Collines department.
The incident occurred when the structure broke as the motorcycle was crossing toward Aklampa. The vehicle plunged into the waterway, and the current swept both occupants into darkness. Their survival hinged on a swift search operation launched by the fire brigade, with support from officers at the Glazoué police station.
Rescue Operation Unfolds
The driver was pulled from the water, and his passenger was located and rescued just minutes later. Both were taken to a health center for treatment. The motorcycle, however, has not yet been recovered.
The alarm was initially raised by an amateur video shared on social media, which showed the two individuals disappearing into the waters of the Lifo. That footage prompted the emergency response that ultimately saved their lives.
