Senegal is preparing to make Olympic history.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026, will mark the first time an Olympic sporting event is held on African soil.
The selection of Senegal ends a wait of more than a century for the continent.
Since the modern Olympic movement began, the Games have been staged in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Africa, despite producing generations of champions in athletics, football, and basketball, had never hosted an Olympic event.
The upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar therefore represent a turning point for the continent, not just for Senegal.
The choice of Senegal aligns with the Youth Olympic Games’ broader mission of focusing on youth, education, inclusion, cultural exchange, and sustainable development. In Senegal, sport is a central part of daily life, particularly for young people.
The Dakar 2026 project aims to use sport as a vehicle for dialogue, social cohesion, and inspiration for African youth.
Dakar itself is a city open to the Atlantic, located at the far western tip of the continent. As Senegal’s political and cultural capital, it is known for its hospitality, artistic scene, music, gastronomy, and historical heritage.
The city also lends its name to the famous Dakar Rally. Beyond the capital, competitions for the 2026 Games will also take place in Diamniadio and Saly.
The Youth Olympic Games are about more than medals. The Dakar 2026 project emphasizes legacy, education, sustainability, and local community participation.
Organizers aim to leave a lasting material and human legacy that benefits local communities and young people long after the Games conclude.
The event will also showcase the breadth of African sporting talent. The continent’s strengths extend well beyond football and long-distance running to include basketball, traditional wrestling, surfing, cycling, and skateboarding.
Dakar 2026 will feature 25 competitive sports and 10 engagement sports, providing a global stage for that diversity.
