Mayamba FA secured top spot in Group A of the Essau Youth Sports Development Association Newettan on Wednesday, overturning a one-goal deficit to beat Medina Daru 2-1 and punch their ticket to the knockout rounds.
The result, sealed by a second-half brace from Malang Marong, saw Mayamba FA finish the group stage level on six points with Berending United but ahead on goals scored.
Second-Half Surge Decides the Contest
Medina Daru looked to have seized control of the match when Mamat Bah found the net in the 60th minute. The lead lasted only three minutes, however, as Marong struck back to level the scores.
Marong then completed his double in the 73rd minute, completing the turnaround and sending Mayamba FA to the summit of the group.
Berending United Also Advance
Mayamba FA’s path to the top was confirmed after Berending United also secured their place in the knockout stages with a comeback victory of their own earlier in the day.
Berending United fell behind to Buniadu United when Amadou Sowe scored in the 14th minute. Nuha Sonko equalised after the interval, before Amadou Sonko put Berending United ahead in the 48th minute. Nuha Sonko then added his second of the game in the 69th minute to wrap up a 3-1 win.
