Muslim faithful in Tillabéri gathered on the night of August 25-26 to mark Mauloud, the commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The observance, which stretched from the Ganda Tché area under the leadership of Cheikh Abdoul Karim to the main gathering place, was devoted to reading the Holy Quran, prayer, and supplications.
According to a report from ONEP-Tillabéri, the night began with the reading of the Holy Quran, with verses chanted in an atmosphere of reverence.
This was followed by sessions of zikr, the remembrance of God, where the faithful repeated formulas of glorification and supplication. Istighfars, or prayers asking God for forgiveness, also held an important place in the proceedings.
As the night progressed, the tone shifted with the singing of hadiths—religious songs praising the Prophet. Through these praises, attendees evoked his qualities, conduct, and message, expressing their attachment to him and recalling the values he embodied.
The celebration also served as a moment of transmission between generations. Elders shared stories of the Prophet’s life with younger attendees, allowing adolescents and young people to discover or deepen their understanding of his teachings.
The report describes the event as a bond between generations around a shared religious memory.
Among those taking part were the governor of the Tillabéri region, Colonel Maina Boukar, and other regional officials. Their presence alongside the population underscored the gathering’s importance in the region’s religious and social life.
This year’s Mauloud took place amid a difficult security context for the Tillabéri region. Despite the trials and concerns related to security, the report noted that the population insisted on celebrating the occasion.
