The West African Gas Pipeline Authority has recorded a 22% increase in gas supply, Director General Chafari Kanya Hanawa told ECOWAS Commissioner Amin Amidu Sulemani in Abuja.

Hanawa was accompanied by senior directors of the authority. She congratulated Sulemani on his appointment and briefed him on the history, governance structure and activities of the West African Gas Pipeline.

According to Hanawa, the pipeline project originated from ECOWAS in 1982 as a means of supporting power generation in the region.

It was established through a treaty signed by the leaders of Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo in 2003, with gas supply and commercial operations beginning in 2011.

She described the working relationship between WAGPA and the Commissioner’s office, as well as the Directorate of Energy and Mines, as positive, saying the directorate has provided strong support for the authority’s activities.

WAGPA, she said, is committed to reinforcing that cooperation and to working closely with the department to strengthen the role of natural gas in the region.

Sulemani expressed appreciation for the authority’s contribution to power generation in the region and emphasised the importance of natural gas in the regional energy mix.

He advocated effective collaboration to promote regional integration in the energy sector and pledged his support for the efficient delivery of WAGPA’s work.

Also in attendance were Arkadius Koumoin, Director of Energy and Mines, and Tanko Bagbara, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner.
