Four translation students from Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis in Senegal are undertaking a professional internship at the ECOWAS Commission’s Translation Section, part of a scholarship programme the Commission chairs.
The students are among six awarded study scholarships by the Commission under the Pan-African Master’s in Conference Interpreting and Translation, known as PAMCIT.
According to a report from the Economic Community of West African States, the placement gives the students first-hand exposure to professional translation workflows, institutional practices and the management of real-life translation projects.
The stated aim is to deepen their understanding of professional translation practice and strengthen their exposure to workplace realities.
PAMCIT operates under IAMLADP, a UN-chaired umbrella body that brings together the language services of international organisations based in Africa.
Its current members are the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the United Nations Offices in Nairobi (UNON), the African Development Bank (AFDB) and the ECOWAS Commission.
As part of the internship programme, the students paid a courtesy visit on Olukemi Robinson-Atabuh, Director of Conference and Protocol, who received them and reaffirmed the Commission’s continued commitment to supporting PAMCIT and its capacity-building objectives, framed as part of the Community’s commitment to West African youth.
The students were accompanied by Alphousseyni Diamanka, Language Coordinator, and Prosper Freeman, English Language Translation Team Lead.
The source material also carries a passage describing the meeting as demonstrating a partnership between the EGDC and AECID and a shared determination to advance gender equality, women’s empowerment and sustainable development.
That passage does not identify the students, the internship or the PAMCIT programme as its subject, and the source does not otherwise connect the two.
