Frankfurt’s public health department has confirmed a rare and tragic health incident at Germany’s largest airport. Six employees contracted malaria, and two have died, according to an announcement made on Wednesday, August 26. The affected individuals worked in various ground handling roles for Fraport, the airport operator, and none had recently traveled to regions where malaria is endemic.
What Happened: A Cluster of Malaria Cases in Frankfurt
The first symptoms among the workers appeared between July 4 and 6. The city’s health department reported the cases on Wednesday, August 26, noting that the other four affected employees are currently hospitalized and recovering. The delayed diagnosis, attributed to the extreme rarity of this type of transmission in Europe, complicated the most severe cases.
The Leading Hypothesis: Airport Malaria
The Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s federal health agency, has put forward the leading hypothesis of “airport malaria.” This theory suggests that an infected Anopheles mosquito survived a long-haul flight, likely originating from sub-Saharan Africa, and then bit the workers on the tarmac. This mode of transmission is exceptionally uncommon in Europe, which is why it took time for health professionals to identify the cause.
Response and Investigation by Fraport
Fraport, the company that manages Frankfurt Airport, has expressed its sorrow and shock over the incident. In response, the company has installed mosquito traps across the airport site. The captured insects will be sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp for genetic analysis to determine their origin and confirm the transmission path.
Public Risk Remains Very Low
Authorities have moved to reassure the public, stressing that the risk to the general population of Frankfurt remains “very, very low.” This is because malaria is not transmitted from person to person; it can only be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The situation is being closely monitored, but there is no indication of wider community spread.

This incident highlights the potential for disease to cross borders through air travel, even in regions where such illnesses are not typically found. The investigation by health authorities and Fraport is ongoing, with genetic analysis expected to provide more clarity on the origins of the infected mosquito.
