ECOWAS and GIZ Assess Hospital and WASH Needs in Guinea-Bissau

ECOWAS and GIZ are conducting a joint mission in Guinea-Bissau from 13 to 23 October 2026 to assess capacity-building needs at the regional hospitals of Bafatá and Gabú, with particular attention to water, sanitation and hygiene services. The delegation has consulted national ministries in Bissau and visited the regional hospital in Bafatá, with the assessment continuing in Gabú before preliminary findings are presented to national institutions.

ECOWAS Commissioner Presses The Gambia on Trade Barriers and ECO Currency Deadlock

ECOWAS Commissioner Dehpue Yenpea Zuo met Gambian finance, central bank and trade officials in Banjul to discuss trade barriers, food security and stalled decisions holding up the planned 2027 launch of the ECO single currency. ECOWAS-REAP Wraps Up Gambia Review as $225 Million Electricity Project Nears December Close

The ECOWAS Regional Electricity Access Project has opened a five-day Lessons and Result Note mission in Banjul, The Gambia, running from October 12 to 16, 2026, ahead of the project's scheduled closure on December 31. The mission, organised by the World Bank, brings together the ECOWAS Directorate of Energy and Mines, the regional coordination unit, The Gambia's project implementation unit and the World Bank to review implementation progress and capture lessons. ECOWAS-REAP, the first project under the Regional Electricity Access Programme, is backed by US$225 million in concessional financing from the World Bank's International Development Association and covers The Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Mali.

Côte d’Ivoire Hands Over Provisional WAHO Headquarters in Grand-Bassam

Côte d'Ivoire has handed over the keys to the provisional headquarters of the West African Health Organisation in Grand-Bassam, following a December 2025 ECOWAS decision to relocate the agency. The premises at the VITIB technology village include 76 offices and space for about 120 staff, pending a permanent headquarters.
