ECOWAS Benin and its national office held a joint field mission August 31-September 5, 2026, assessing ECOWAS-funded projects, identifying challenges and improving coordination.

Split into two teams covering the country’s northern and southern regions, the mission conducted 20 site visits across seven interventions in 17 municipalities, alongside 18 institutional audiences with local and prefectural authorities.

The interventions visited spanned a varied portfolio: revitalizing the local dairy sector, developing forage production, building youth skills and employability in the agricultural and agro-sylvo-pastoral sectors, agroecological training, health, and cross-border cooperation.

According to the mission’s account, field observations pointed to several tangible achievements, including improved production and processing capacities at certain dairy units, stronger technical and entrepreneurial skills among young people, and the completion of infrastructure and provision of equipment in support of local economic activities.

The mission said these accomplishments contribute to better working conditions, strengthened beneficiary capacities, and the growth of production and training activities.

The mission also identified challenges relating to equipment availability, post-training support for beneficiaries, coordination among stakeholders, and the sustainability of achievements.

Discussions with municipal authorities, the mission said, emphasized the need to strengthen those authorities’ involvement in monitoring interventions and to raise the visibility of ECOWAS support among local populations.

At the close of the mission, the Resident Representation and the ECOWAS National Office drew on their findings to formulate recommendations aimed at strengthening close-range monitoring, improving coordination of interventions, and promoting the sustainability of results for the benefit of the Beninese population.

The mission is presented as part of the momentum behind ECOWAS Vision 2050, which envisions an “ECOWAS of Peoples: Fully Integrated, Peaceful, and Prosperous,” as operationalized in the 2023–2027 Community Strategic Framework.
