According to the official communiqué, preliminary investigations have yielded a body of evidence deemed solid, implicating several active-duty soldiers, as well as military personnel who have been discharged or are pending discharge. These individuals are alleged to have been involved at various levels, including in the planning, coordination, and execution of the attacks. The Military Prosecutor’s office also cited the presumed involvement of certain political figures, notably Oumar Mariko.

The investigation has further confirmed the participation of one Alassane Diallo, a discharged soldier who was killed during the fighting that targeted the Kati garrison.

Other individuals have been identified as presumed co-perpetrators and accomplices. They are: Diakaridia SODIO, active-duty soldier; Moussa DIANE, active-duty soldier; Mamadou KEITA, active-duty soldier; and Soïba DIARRA.

The Prosecutor stated that several arrests have already been successfully carried out and that investigations are continuing actively to apprehend all perpetrators, co-perpetrators, and accomplices.

Context and Implications

This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened insecurity in Mali, where the state has struggled to contain a decade-long insurgency that has repeatedly struck the capital and military installations. The targeting of the Defence Minister’s home marks a significant escalation, underscoring the reach of armed groups and the vulnerability of senior state officials.

Analysts often point to the complex web of alliances and grievances within the security forces, where discharged soldiers have been known to join insurgent ranks. The inclusion of a prominent political figure like Oumar Mariko — a long-time opposition leader and former presidential candidate — adds a deeply political dimension to the case. Mariko has previously been arrested and released on charges related to national security, and his name has surfaced in connection with alleged coup plots.

The Military Prosecutor’s office has praised the professionalism of the investigative units and security services, while reassuring the national and international public that all legal procedures will be strictly followed. It indicated that further updates on the investigation’s progress will be communicated in due course.
