Japan delivered 22 construction and public works machines to Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Construction of the Homeland, in a handover ceremony in Ouagadougou on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The equipment, valued at 1 billion 6 million yen (over 3 billion FCFA), was received by Minister Mikaïlou Sidibé from Japanese Ambassador Nagashima Jun.
The consignment includes two concrete mixers, two wheel loaders, two tractors, four dump trucks, four mist blowers, two backhoe loaders, two hydraulic excavators, and four compactors.
According to Minister Sidibé, the delivery follows a grant agreement signed in 2024 between Burkina Faso and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
He noted that this batch represents part of the roughly forty machines planned under the project to improve road maintenance equipment.
Improving emergency response capabilities
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Sidibé said the equipment will significantly improve the intervention capabilities of the maintenance and rehabilitation brigade for emergency operations.
He assured that the government is committed to ensuring the rational, efficient, and sustainable use of the tools to optimize their contribution to the project’s objectives.
He also reaffirmed Burkina Faso’s attachment to its friendly and cooperative relations with Japan, expressing hope that the partnership will continue to strengthen and deepen in the years to come.
Ambassador Nagashima Jun recalled the project’s key stages, from the exchange of notes in 2023 to the signing of the agreement in 2024.
He stressed the strategic importance of Burkina Faso’s road network for the entire West African region, noting that Burkina Faso is a landlocked country surrounded by six neighboring states, with more than 80% of its logistics flows relying on road transport.
The road network centered on the capital, Ouagadougou, plays a crucial role as a logistics hub, he explained.
Beyond road maintenance, the ambassador said the goal is to promote regional economic integration, improve living conditions, and support sustainable economic growth.
He also stated that the project is part of implementing commitments made by Japan at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in 2025, in favor of strengthening regional integration and improving connectivity.
He expressed the wish that this donation constitutes a decisive step toward the prosperity of Burkina Faso.
