Speaking after the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Trump described the event as “incredible” and claimed it was “four times more successful than any FIFA World Cup ever held before,” adding that he had been told it was even “five times more” successful.
A Night at the Final
Trump attended the World Cup final alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres. According to reports, Trump was seen touching the trophy during the match and, after the final whistle, walked onto the pitch amid boos. He greeted the Argentine players, though Argentina defender Cuti Romero notably sidestepped the former president. Trump then handed the trophy to Spain’s Rodri and attempted to join the team photo before the Spanish captain asked him to step away. He ultimately moved to the side of the shot, appearing alongside Infantino.
Praise for FIFA and the Host Nation
In a media statement on the tarmac after returning from the match, Trump praised FIFA’s organization. “I thought FIFA was incredible. There has never been anything like it in terms of an event, not to mention soccer or football, whatever you call it,” he said. He expressed pride in the United States as host, stating, “We are very proud of our country. Trump made a significant announcement during a Fox Sports interview, declaring that the United States would “immediately” ask to host another World Cup. “We have to do it again, as long as I’m still here. You hear me, Gianni?” he said, addressing Infantino. He suggested a strategy of having FIFA choose two countries for the next tournament—the United States and another nation—to “ease the anger and shock a bit.” Trump also admitted he had been wrong to warn FIFA before the tournament that some stadiums might not fill, concluding, “I guess I was dead wrong.”

While the tournament was widely praised by organizers, it was not without criticism. Some fans and teams raised concerns over excessive security searches, match schedules, refereeing decisions (notably involving player Balogun), hydration breaks, and exorbitant ticket prices. Travel bans to the USA for some fans also drew complaints.
