In a significant escalation of their campaign against the ruling military authorities, jihadist groups affiliated with the JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) have issued a public call for a broad “common front” aimed at “ending the junta” in Mali and facilitating “a peaceful and inclusive transition.” The statement, released on Thursday, marks a rare and explicit political overture from the coalition, which has long focused on military operations against state forces and their allies.

Simultaneously, the group began implementing a previously announced road blockade targeting the capital, Bamako, on the same day. The blockade, which restricts movement on key arteries leading into the city, is intended to pressure the junta-led government of Colonel Assimi Goïta by disrupting supply lines and civilian travel. This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened insecurity across the Sahel, where jihadist groups have exploited political instability and a vacuum in state authority since the coups of 2020 and 2021.

Analysts often point to the JNIM’s dual strategy of military pressure and political messaging as a calculated effort to fracture the junta’s domestic support base. By calling for a “peaceful and inclusive transition,” the group appears to be positioning itself as a potential political actor, even as it maintains its armed insurgency. The implications for the regional market—particularly for trade routes connecting Bamako to neighbouring countries—are severe, as the blockade threatens to choke off essential goods and drive up prices in a country already grappling with economic sanctions and inflation.

The junta has yet to issue an official response to the JNIM’s call, but security sources indicate that reinforcements have been deployed to checkpoints around the capital. The situation remains fluid, with residents reporting long delays and shortages of basic commodities in some outlying districts.
