Two kamikaze drones from south of Niafunké, across the Niger River, missed their targets in the town Thursday, lightly injuring one person treated by Defense and Security Forces (FDS), AMAP reported, citing a security source.
According to information gathered, one of the devices fell in the rice fields of the Goubo rice-growing area, while the second crashed into the compound of a resident, damaging his solar installations.
Alerted to the incident, the FDS were the first to intervene at the scene. They assisted the injured person, who was evacuated to the Reference Health Center (CSRéf) for treatment, before securing the perimeter.
Sweeping operations are continuing across the area.
The head of the household whose compound was hit praised the responsiveness of the defense forces. According to him, their intervention and the diversion of the devices’ trajectory helped avoid a heavier toll.
Despite the incident, the weekly market in Niafunké is proceeding normally. The FDS are continuing their operations and say the situation is under control.
