A resident doctor at the Federal Medical Centre Abuja has been named overall best candidate at first sitting in the 2025 Part I examination of the West African College of Physicians.
Dr Maryam Ahmed Almustapha, of the hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine, will receive the David Tamunotonye Hart Prize in recognition of the result.
The prize is to be presented at the College’s Annual General and Scientific Meeting in Abuja on October 26, 2026, according to a statement issued by the hospital’s public relations officer, Obadiah N.K. Gana.
The WACP Part I examination is a stage in postgraduate training for physicians in West Africa, sitting between initial residency and the later fellowship-level assessments that candidates must clear to progress.
Candidates who pass at first sitting complete that stage without a resit.
The statement credited the result in part to the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, along with the leadership and trainers of the Department of Internal Medicine and the hospital’s management and staff.
It described the outcome as reflecting the institution’s commitment to postgraduate residency training and academic development.
FMC Abuja has positioned the achievement as part of a wider record in medical education, saying its academic results have drawn recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders.
The statement did not give details of that recognition or name any institution outside the country.
The hospital’s management and community congratulated Almustapha on the result and commended those it said contributed to her success.
